Alliance Party's Sorcha Eastwood in tears as she accepts leadership after peer's murder
MLA Sorcha Eastwood has been elected leader of the Alliance Party in Northern Ireland, following the tragic murder of her predecessor, Natalie McNally.
Ms Eastwood, who represents the Lagan Valley constituency, paid tribute to Ms McNally, describing her as a "bright light" who had been "cruelly taken from us".
She said she was "honoured and humbled" to take on the role, but admitted that it was "a difficult time for the party and for Northern Ireland".
Ms Eastwood said she would work to build a "fairer, more prosperous and more united society" in Northern Ireland.
She added that she would work to "heal the divisions" that have plagued the region for decades.
Ms Eastwood's election as leader of the Alliance Party is a significant moment for Northern Ireland.
The party is the largest cross-community party in the region, and is seen as a moderate voice in the peace process.
Ms Eastwood's election as leader is likely to be seen as a positive step towards reconciliation and healing in Northern Ireland.
