On October 2, 1968, ten days before the opening of the Games, a group of student protesters were killed by government forces in the Tlatelolco Plaza. The massacre overshadowed the Games, and led to calls for the event to be canceled.

Despite the controversy, the 1968 Olympics were a sporting success. A total of 303 medals were awarded, with the Soviet Union winning the most with 91 medals. The United States finished second with 45 medals, and East Germany finished third with 25 medals.

The 1968 Olympics were also a record-breaking event. A total of 2240 records were set, including 36 world records. Bob Beamon's long jump of 8.90 meters, which broke the previous world record by nearly two feet, is considered one of the greatest athletic achievements of all time.

The 1968 Olympics were a significant event in the history of the Olympic Games. They were the first Games to be held in a developing country, and they helped to raise the profile of the Olympic Games around the world.
